Rivers & Water

Guilin is just as well known for its rivers and waterways, with plenty of ways to enjoy the scenery and get out on the water. This guide covers the main riverside attractions and water activities, with practical details such as time needed, how to get there, and useful tips for making the most of your visit.

日月

Two Rivers and Four Lakes & Sun and Moon Pagodas

Two Rivers and Four Lakes is one of Guilin’s most iconic attractions. This is an open urban scenic area where you can walk along the lakes and enjoy the illuminated cityscape and the famous Sun and Moon Pagodas at night. There is no need to set aside a fixed amount of time here, so you can decide how long to stay depending on your energy and interests. Just avoid staying out too late, as you will need to get up early the next morning.

Li River Cruise

The Li River Cruise is one of the classic ways to experience Guilin’s landscape. As the boat travels downstream toward Yangshuo, you’ll pass some of the river’s most iconic scenery, including Nine Horses Fresco Hill, the famous landscape featured on the 20-yuan banknote, and the karst peaks around Xingping. With limestone mountains rising dramatically along both sides of the river, the cruise offers a relaxing way to take in the landscapes that make Guilin famous.

Suggested time: 4h

Tips:

  • Book your tickets 1–3 days in advance through the WeChat mini program “Li River Ticket Office ”. Select Mopanshan Pier → Longtoushan Pier. There are two options: 3-star cruise (RMB 215) and 4-star cruise (RMB 360, including a buffet). Both include onboard commentary.
  • I recommend taking a morning cruise departing around 8–9 AM. From central Guilin, it takes about 40 minutes by taxi to Mopanshan Pier. A shuttle bus to the pier is also available from Guilin Railway Station

Yulong River Bamboo Rafting

The bamboo rafting trips are all one-way, with several routes to choose from. They are mainly divided into upper and lower sections of the Yulong River. The upper section has clearer water and a more natural landscape, while the lower section is wider and offers more convenient transportation after getting off the raft.

Popular routes

Jinlong Bridge → Jiuxian: RMB 320 per two-person raft, about 90 minutes. With 9 dams to ride over, this is one of the most exciting sections and a popular choice for those looking for a more thrilling experience.

Shui’edi → Comprehensive Pier: About 40 minutes with 4 dams. This downstream route is known for its beautiful scenery and is one of the most popular photo-friendly sections.

 Less crowded, highly rated

Jima Pier → Comprehensive Pier: RMB 320 per two-person raft, about 90 minutes, with 9 dams. The first half is generally less crowded, and the route is often considered a good-value option.

Family-friendly

Longtan Pier → Fenglou Pier: RMB 300 per three-person raft, about 30–40 minutes. It has 4 relatively gentle dams, making it a more comfortable option for families with children or older travelers.

Tips

  • Book your ticket at 8 AM the day before through the WeChat mini program “i游阳朔”(iTour Yangshuo). If you don’t manage to get a ticket, you can usually go to the pier early and buy one on-site.
  • Yulong River rafting is very popular. The earliest and latest departures are generally less crowded, so choose your time based on the season and how busy the route is.
  • Expect longer waits during peak season (July–October): around 20 minutes–1 hour on weekdays and 1–2 hours on weekends. During the low season (November–February), there is usually little to no waiting, while weekends and holidays may take around 10 minutes. You can also check the number of rafts waiting for inspection in the mini program to decide when to go.
古东瀑布

Gudong Waterfall

Gudong Waterfall is a popular summer escape about 40 minutes from Guilin city center, and it’s known as the only multi-level waterfall in China that visitors can climb. The waterfall has six sections with different levels of climbing difficulty, so you can choose a route that suits you and make your way up through the rushing water. Besides climbing the waterfall and playing in the water, you can also try outdoor activities such as the zipline, suspension bridge, and alpine slide. When you want to slow down, there are tea houses and other spots where you can sit and relax.

Gudong Waterfall is especially popular with children, with easier sections available for younger visitors. There are safety measures in place and staff on hand around the main activity areas.

Driving yourself or joining a day tour is recommended. Gudong Waterfall is often combined with nearby Guanyan Cave or Daxu ancient town in one-day tour itineraries. If you’re taking a taxi, it’s best to arrange your ride back in advance, as finding one after your visit can be difficult.
